How LCD Projectors Work (Part 1 of 2)

This is part 1 of 2 showing how a typical LCD projector works, using a projector from a used up rear projection TV. You will see how the optical system works in this part, from the special mirrors used to let some color light through, but reflect others, and the lens systems which produces light uniformity, as well as tinted lenses to help true up some colors. Part 2 will continue with the image assembly, including the projection lenses, the prizm that combines the three colors of the displays, to the output cast on a wall.
Could you ever imagine a projector integrated into a cell phone? LG has built a prototype of such a thing. If it makes it to market, expect to see it in 2010.

This thing is fairly useless now, as the one lens that keeps the geometry is currently “in hiding”. I’m not sure about selling it yet, as I might do something with it. Not sure yet.
I’ll have to see if I can find that important lens first…..

@KeithWasHere1 eh i think it might of been a few things..like the cord i used i think the ground pin might of been faulty and the juice didnt have anywhere to go or shipping might of knocked the ballast out of whack.. it was a double deal it and a viewsonic pj350 (it and the dell 3100mp and a few other projos are the exact same just rebadged) so two projos with bulbs w/low hours for like 38 with free shipping isnt bad..and the board it burned up only costs like 35 bucks to replace.so no biggie.

@georgef551 not nessiscarily..im doing some R & D on a laser projector and the lenses and dichros would come in real handy…how many are there? and if you were to sell..what kinda price? if you got a model number i can look it up and get more info on it…still got the projection lens?

Oh, no, I don’t have any of that stuff. Just the optics. The boards, bulbs, all long gone. This won’t be any use to you then.

i just got a dell 3100mp off the net the other day for 30 some odd bucks with bulb…plugged it in and the damn DC-DC board fried on me..not more than 2 min out of the box and a big dark cloud of smoke comes out of it….thought i was getting a killer deal…

@georgef551 thats cool,i just want the lenses and boards and LCD’S..bulbs too if you got them. i mess with LCD and CRT projos alot and am always looking for spare parts…what kind of projo was it?

I’m not sure. There’s an important piece that got misplaced (corrective lens to eliminate severe pincushioning), and some of it’s housing is broke. Nothing a little glue couldn’t somewhat fix).

If it allows blue, and reflects red and green, this particular projector won’t work.
(Yellow passes through the first lens, reflects blue.)

no they are pass lenses…some will will allow blue but reflect red and green..other will allow green but reflect reg and blue and so on.

First lens is the integrator lens and second is the polariser. The integrator lens helps having a more uniform light projected so the corners are as illuminated as the centre of the image.
